The Great Sunflower Project

From 2009-2011, CanDo volunteers distributed Lemon Queen sunflower seeds and literature to interested people at our table at the Napa Farmers’ Market.  When the sunflowers bloomed, people were asked to observe the flowers and do a pollinator count. The stated goal (from the website) is to find out “how our green spaces in the urban, suburban and rural landscapes, are connected as well as shedding light on how to help pollinators." During the summers of 2010 and 2011, CanDo planted Lemon Queen sunflowers at the Napa Community Garden and posted signs explaining the project, encouraging gardeners to observe and count pollinators and submit the data to the Community Garden account on the Great Sunflower Project website (www.greatsunflower.org). Seeds and signs were purchased with funds donated by CanDo volunteers.
